Breaking: Vinny Del Negro Not Returning to Los Angeles Clippers

Want more proof that the NBA is not a coaches league? You remember the Lebron decision? The (ongoing) Dwight Howard indecision? The Chris Paul sweepstakes and (originally vetoed or actual) trade? No one has clamored before over the Vinny Del Negro sweepstakes. And while it is a possibility they could now, it’s unlikely to be the new trend.

As a source told Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, the Clippers informed coach Vinny Del Negro that he will not be brought back by the team.

Wojnarowski went on to clarify

Vinny Del Negro was the most successful coach in Clippers franchise history. He is hot on the heels of his best season as a head coach. Yet no one is surprised, and no one is upset save the coach himself, and a handful of Lakers fans who had complete confidence in his incompetence.

I wonder that if privately the Clippers offered Del Negro a one year option to return. In theory, no one should know this Clippers team better than Del Negro. If he thought they were only one year away, even if he wanted or deserved a longer extension, he would have readily taken a one year deal. If he had one more year on his contract, the Clippers likely would have kept him on and not gone a new direction.

But it’s actually easier to start fresh with a new coach than decide how many years to extend him, and how many days into that time they planned on firing Del Negro anyway.
