Baseball season has just started, and here we are talking pigskin.

While the Dodgers have Angels have officially thrown their first pitches – the Dodgers have already played three of their 162 games – even though their seasons won’t commence for another five months, UCLA and USC have begun with preparing for their campaigns.

Steve Sarkisian‘s team began their preparations in March; they have already held six practices as the Sarkisian Era has begun.

The Trojans took a week off for Spring Break, but they have started back up again in earnest at Howard Jones Field on campus.

The big change that Sark has implemented is a up-tempo, no-huddle spread offense like what’s used at Oregon and UCLA, which the coach, who will call the plays along with offensive coordinator Clay Helton, hopes will result in a lot more points on the board.

The practices are open to the public, who can watch from Dedeaux Field, USC’s baseball stadium; go to their web site, www.usctrojans.com, for specific dates and times.

Meanwhile, Jim Mora will begin getting ready for his third year in Westwood on the heels of the Bruins announcing that they have signed a deal to play SEC mega-power LSU in a home-and-home series.

As those games with the Tigers will be in 2021 in the Rose Bowl and 2014 in Baton Rouge, LA, the players who will be participating in those match ups are in elementary school playing Pop Warner football now, but it’s still exciting news all the same.

And on top of that, although Johnny Manziel won’t be involved the Bruins have a home-and-home deal with Texas A & M that will be played much sooner than the LSU clashes, their dates with the Aggies being in 2016 at College Station and in 2017 at the Rose Bowl.

At least the guys who’ll be playing in those games are in high school at this moment.

Athletic Director Dan Guerrero should be given credit for arranging such high-profile games.

Like their crosstown rivals, the Bruins’ practices – held at Spaulding Field on campus –  are open to the public with the exception of the April 12 workout; go to www.uclabruins.com for dates and times.
