Shortly after losing the National Championship to Connecticut, University of Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari dismissed rumors that he would be leaving to become the Los Angeles Lakers next Head Coach. Not only did Calipari dismiss the Laker rumors, he dismantled them.
Calipari: “The Lakers have a basketball coach, Kentucky has a basketball coach. I’m not even going to dignify that stuff.”

Not only did Calipari silence the rumors, which were enflamed by a series of tweets by former Kentucky star and NBA executive Rex Chapman, Mitch Kupchak also denied that the Lakers had an interest or were even in contact with Calipari.

It should come as no surprise that these “rumors” are false. March Madness tends to bleed into April when it comes to the coaching carousel. Heck, now that UConn coach Kevin Ollie has won a National Title one would expect his name to pop up for the Lakers job soon enough. The Lakers currently have a Head Coach and have there is a strong feeling within the industry that Mike D’Antoni, the current Lakers Head Coach, will be back to coach the team next season, despite Kobe Bryant‘s wishes to send him packing.
One thing is certain in Laker Nation: the fans do not want Mike D’Antoni to coach the team next season. We’ve gone through this before. There is no reason, other than to save money, that the Lakers should retain D’Antoni. If the Lakers have the opportunity to go out and get a Calipari, an Ollie, a “fill in the blank name that may actually be a relevant and competent NBA Head Coach”, they should absolutely can D’Antoni and bring in some new blood.
However, as of tonight it looks as if John Calipari WILL NOT be the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
