LOS ANGELES GALAXY 3 – CHIVAS USA 0

All-Time Series:  Galaxy leads, 21-4-7

Lakers – Clippers.

Dodgers – Angels.

Kings – Ducks.

UCLA – USC.

Just when you begin to feel burnt out by all the rivalries in L.A., another duo of teams that call the same venue home  - Stub Hub Center in Carson –  a well as the same city, made their annual grunge match debut on Sunday.

As SoCal fans who follow the world’s most popular sport know, Major League Soccer has two teams in Los Angeles, the Galaxy and Chivas USA.

They have been playing each other since 2005, and to say that it has been one-sided would be an understatement as stars like David Beckham, and Landon Donovan have made sure that L.A., as far as soccer is concerned, was a Galaxy town.

Being that the Galaxy was off to a slow start in the just-opened MLS season with a loss and a draw in its first two games, while their Chivas USA counterparts had accumulated five points and were already ahead of the Galaxy in the standings; a rare occurrence I may add…

The fans of the red-striped shirted club, which serves as a sort-of farm team to what is considered the New York Yankees of Mexican soccer, Chivas de Guadalajara, thought they had a decent shot to beat the Galaxy, which has had a much more storied history as they have two MLS titles and a Champions Cup to their credit.

Those hopes were dashed pretty quickly at Stub Hub Center as Robbie Keane’s goal in the 37th minute, which was added by goals from Stefan Ishizaki and Baggio Husidic and combined with the Galaxy outshooting Chivas USA 19-5 and controlling the ball for 60% of the match…

Were more than enough for a 3-0 win before crowd of just over 15,000, many of whom were ecstatic as part of the Angel City Brigade, the Galaxy’s official fan group.

It was their first win of the season.

And another albatross around Chivas USA’s neck, as they haven’t had a winning record since 2009 and have spent the bulk of their history at or near the bottom of the MLS standings.

It was also the first of three games between the two teams, the others being on June 8 and August 31.

It will be interesting to see if Chivas USA is still ahead of the Galaxy the next time they meet, or will order be restored in the eyes of the Angel City Brigade.
