Report: John Calipari To Be Next Los Angeles Lakers Coach?

According to a report first seen on Black Sports Online former Kentucky player and NBA executive Rex Chapman believes that John Calipari, who is currently coaching the Kentucky Wildcats in the National Championship game, will be the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. This is not a joke. Take a look at his tweets below.

Chapman reveal this information on the night before the National Championship and the news is slowly circulating around the media world. I don’t know if this is some sort of cruel joke or if Chapman, who is definitely in the know, is releasing this information because he just found it out.

Regardless, this is the rumor to end all rumors when it comes to Laker Nation. Not only does Chapman believe that Calipari is going to be the next Head Coach of the Lakers, he believes it to be a “done deal”, which seems a little crazy, if not insane.

Calipari has been with the Kentucky Wildcats for 5 seasons and won a National Championship in 2012. Would Coach Cal jump to the NBA, where he previously coached the New Jersey Nets? Or is this simply a rumor that comes out when there is so much media attention being paid to Calipari on the night before the National Championship? The answer is that we just don’t know.

If this is true it would mean that the Lakers are moving on from the incumbent Mike D’Antoni, who has proved he is unworthy of a Head Coaching gig in the NBA. This would also represent the second time the Lakers have gone after a high profile college coach in the last decade. How quickly we forget that Mike Krzyzewski, aka Coach K of the Duke Blue Devils, nearly became the coach of the Lakers in 2005 before bowing out of the running. That lead to the Lakers hiring of Rudy Tomjanovich, which was an unmitigated disaster in it’s own right.

The real question is if this report is for real or is it some sort of cruel week-late April Fools joke. I guess we’ll all have to wait and find out.

UPDATE

According to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports the Lakers have denied the claims by Rex Chapman and have had no conversations about a potential replacement for Mike D’Antoni.
