Doc Rivers, the Los Angeles Clippers first year Head Coach, isn’t sure whether or not he can continue working for the team after hearing Donald Sterling’s disgusting comments regarding race.
“Don’t know yet,” Rivers said when asked if there were things he needed to hear from Sterling after an audio tape surfaced of Sterling purportedly making racist remarks to his girlfriend V. Stiviano. “I’m just going to leave it at that.” (via Arash Markazi’s article on ESPNLA.com)
Rivers said that he has not talked to Sterling and doesn’t plan to in the near future, saying there is no need to.
“I’ve not talked to Donald yet,” Rivers said. “Really no need right now, at least for me.”
Rivers has other issues to attend to. The Clippers are leading the Warriors 2-1 in their first round series; however, it looks like they will lose Game 4 and the series will come back to Los Angeles all tied up. Sterling’s comments certainly couldn’t have come at a worse time for Rivers and the Clippers.
No one would fault Rivers for questions his employment with the Clippers. No one in their right mind would like to work for a man like Donald Sterling, let alone someone with the klout of Doc Rivers. Rivers has a difficult decision to make this summer, though he may not be working for Sterling for a long time pending the NBA’s investigation into the comments made by Sterling.
We really won’t know anything until the NBA comes down with it’s punishment but it is certainly possible that this may be Rivers only season with the team if he feels like he cannot coach in this environment any longer.
