None of these teams should come as a surprise to anyone. Gasol has made it clear that he is only interested in signing with a legitimate title contender, in what will probably be his last NBA contract.
Gasol is interested in the Grizzlies because they have a great base and have been competitive for the last three years, his brother Marc plays for the team, and he is familiar with the city and fans having spent the first half of his career in Memphis.
The Bulls and Spurs would both be intriguing options for Gasol. The Spurs are one of the best run franchises in all of sports and adding Gasol to a big man dynamic that already includes future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter would be intriguing. As for the Bulls, Gasol would work very well with Derrick Rose and a lot of the offense would be run through him. However, would Thibodeau be able to get Gasol to play defense the way he expects from his other stars?
Lastly, Gasol is interested in re-signing with the Lakers due to the fact that Mike D’Antoni is no longer the Lakers head coach. Gasol is a big fan of Los Angeles and his best friend in the league in Kobe Bryant. Would he stay to give it one last go with Kobe?
