Dee Gordon: From Afterthought to All-Star

facebooktwitterreddit

Last we spoke of Dee Gordon, it was mentioned how his amazing start for the Los Angeles Dodgers definitely is cause for excitement in watching his career revived in the Dodger infield.  The excitement paid off after an 8-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.  Dee Gordon had been named an All-Star.

It’s moments like this that make baseball a beauty.  Gordon has worked hard.  He’s had so many ups and downs as well as doubts about his career as a major league ball player.  It’s not a wonder that his teammates were of utter jubilation to hear the news that Gordon will be one of 4 Dodgers to represent the franchise in the All-Star game.

  • “He’s been through a lot. Playing all sorts of different positions, had to go and try the outfield, he’s been everywhere. So for him to get to second base and excel the way he has and play the way he’s played the first half, it’s just a huge testament to him and his work ethic and his character.”- Clayton Kershaw

Gordon makes his first All-Star appearance in his 4 year career.  Batting .301, and leading the majors in triples (9), as well as stolen bases (42), Gordon is the 2nd Dodger in franchise history with 40 or more steals before the All-Star break.  Dee Gordon is also the first Dodger in 5 years to make the All-Star team (Orlando Hudson was the last to do so in 2009).  Dee Gordon is also 2nd among his position with his batting average with runners in scoring position (.370).  His season nearly from opening day has shown that he is up for the challenge to be the Dodgers everyday starter and future 2nd baseman.

When told by manager Don Mattingly of his all-star selection, Gordon stated that he “almost cried.”

National league peers voted to add Dee Gordon onto the All-Star roster.  Although Gordon had a large share of his Dodger fan base vote strongly and often for his inclusion into the All-Star game, one can believe it is a high honor even more to be acknowledged as deserving by your own peers.

“It’s awesome Once you have that, nobody can take that away from you. That’s special. It didn’t come easy for him. He had to change positions. I think everybody, during spring training, expected him to fall on his face. This is the reward.”- Josh Beckett

Dee Gordon’s amazing story and success this baseball season fuels the anticipation that he will be a highly valuable asset in the Dodgers playoff push in October.  Albeit, pitching, consistent hitting, and defense by the whole Dodgers franchise has been essential mid-summer in the Dodgers successful run to the top of the National League West, Gordon has played a key role in much of it as well.

Gordon is on the path of better things to come for the 2014 Los Angeles Dodgers.  Seeing is believing…but pay attention because he’s going by in a ‘flash’.
