Carmelo Anthony Returning To The Knicks?

According to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, Carmelo Anthony will announce his decision to return to the New York Knicks on Thursday.

Anthony, who was thought to be waiting for LeBron James to announce his decision before committing to a team, had previously been expected to make a decision on Monday; however, had been quiet over the past couple of days. According to Isola, it looks he has made a decision.

The report by Isola is based on a conversation with a friend of Anthony’s who says that he “believes in Phil”. While that doesn’t constitute a firm commitment to the Knicks, it certainly looks like at this point that the Los Angeles Lakers may have to convince Anthony at the last second to change his mind.

Lakers management has been confident in recent days that they would be able to steer Anthony towards Los Angeles and that the longer the decision took the better the Lakers odds were of landing Anthony. At this point we don’t know if this report is to be taken seriously or not; however, the Lakers and the Chicago Bulls will certainly be on the line with Anthony’s representatives within the hour to try and change his mind at the last minute.

Here is a snippet from the Isola’s conversation with Anthony’s friend:

“He will have something for everybody on Thursday,” said the friend who was with Anthony before Anthony’s scheduled workout with Kevin Durant and Kevin Love in Los Angeles on Wednesday. “He is really torn because this is the biggest decision of his career. But he wants to get it done in New York. He told me he believes in Phil.

If this report is indeed true, Carmelo will return to the Knicks with a 5-year deal worth a reported $130M. This decision would also leave the Lakers, once again, in limbo. The Lakers will now move on to their contingency plan, which involves trying to convince tier two free agents to accept short term, lucrative contracts. Expect the Lakers to reach out to Lance Stephenson, Isaiah Thomas, and Trevor Ariza in the coming days, along with Pau Gasol and Nick Young.
