Angels’ Mike Trout Heading For Back-To-Back MVPs

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is pretty damn good huh? Just how good is he? In his fifth year in the majors he’s put on quite the show. Since his inception as a 19 year old, he’s drawn similar comparisons to HOF Willie Mays by putting up nearly identical numbers to the Giants’ great.

What’s scary is that the 23-year-old is still getting better. We may be in the midst of watching one of the All-Time greats in baseball history. Trout has one MVP to his name already and he may be en route to a second. In reality he should have won his first MVP title in 2012 when he hit 30 HR, 111 RBI and had 39 SB but unfortunately lost to Miguel Cabrera who earned the first Triple Crown since 1967. Trout had to settle for Rookie of the year.

Trout’s numbers this season for the AL West division leading Halos, .315/.378/.559/1.038 with a league-leading 31 home runs and 64 RBI. He’s 1 of 4 active players in the league to have an OBP over 1.000. The other three sluggers are Paul Goldschmidt, Bryce Harper and the injured Cabrera.

To add to Trout’s greatness, on Sunday he hit two home runs including a grand slam into a fan-made Trout net. Before hitting the grand salami, he jammed his wrist trying to make a diving catch. Of course he shook it off to end the game 4-4, two homers and 5 RBI. Angel fans all over social media say that he is “Troustanding.”

Trout should be the leading candidate for the most valuable player award again this year. Other possible candidates that come to mind are Angels’ Albert Pujols, Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson and even Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez who is having a surprising comeback year. Goldschmidt and Harper have nearly identical stat lines to Trout but they are over on the NL so they will surely duke it out for NL MVP honors.

The Angels’ Centerfielder claimed his second consecutive All-Star game MVP by hitting a home run off the hottest pitcher at the time in Zack Greinke. He also had two runs batted in and finished the game 2-for-3.

The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to Trout. Especially in the city of Los Angeles where their Southern California rival Dodgers have had two young phenoms burst into the scene. Yasiel Puig seemed like he was going to be the next big thing in baseball but has then cooled off and now reportedly on the trade block. Joc Pederson is the new threat in Tinsel town with his unexpected surge especially his HR derby performance but Trout is miles away ahead of the Dodgers’ Centerfielder.

Mike Trout is clearly the best player in baseball. At 23 he’s accomplished so much in his career. He’s the youngest to hit for the cycle (2013) in the AL, multiple All-Star MVP awards, an MVP, silver slugger awards, rookie of the year and countless others. All he needs to validate his greatness is a World Series ring.

Let’s just sit back and enjoy this marvelous player lead the new generation out of the steroid era.
