Anaheim Ducks And Carl Hagelin Agree On Four-Year Deal

Carl Hagelin was the only free agent left on the Anaheim Ducks organization until now. Just yesterday, the former New York Ranger forward agreed to a four-year extension worth a total of $16 million. With this signing, the Ducks have made a $4 million hit against their salary cap. With enough cap space remaining, the Ducks took their chances and got Hagelin from the Rangers in trade that involved local prospect Emerson Etem.

  • Hagelin made $2.4 million last season with the Rangers and was still under a two-year contract. However, there were signs that the Rangers didn’t express interest in resigning the then-winger to the $4 million range, which eventually he would get. It took a while for the Ducks to negotiate the deal. Days before the draft, Ducks GM Bob Murray and J.P. Berry, Hagelin’s agent, told press they were close to negotiating a deal.

While with the Rangers, Hagelin totaled 58 goals in 266 total games played, which included three shorthanded goals and two power play goals over a course of four seasons in the NHL. Last season, he totaled in 17 goals and 18 assists while playing in all 82 games. The Ducks hope that Hagelin will fill in Etem’s shoes with the speed, and be a proven player in any situation.

With the recent signing of Jakob Silfverberg ,the Ducks feel they have filled the final piece of the off-season puzzle and their business has been completed. Hagelin and Silfverberg both played on the Swedish Olympic team in Sochi, where they won a silver medal. Hagelin should feel comfortable playing in Anaheim along side his Olympic teammate.

With the Hagelin signing, the Ducks have now committed $63 million for the 2015-16 season. They still have $8.3 million available under the salary cap going into this season. Also the Ducks have resigned center Ryan Kesler and newly acquired defenseman Kevin Bieksa, whom both were teammates on the Vancouver Canucks. Kesler’s deal was worth $41.25 million for six years and Bieksa was picked up in June after Francois Beauchemin departed in free agency and signed a two-year contract worth $8 million.

Many key players left the Ducks this summer, however, with these key signings, the Ducks look composed and ready to make another run at the Stanley Cup. Hagelin looks to be a good fill in for the departed Etem. He also brings playoff experience to the Ducks as he played in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final while with the Rangers. Hagelin has also been successful on the penalty kill.
