Should the Lakers shoot for Kevin Durant once he is a free agent?

In this off-season the Los Angles Lakers have been very active or at least a part of many different rumors about who they are going after in free agency and the draft.

The 2016 NBA post-season is almost complete, with the Finals now set in a rematch between the defending champion Golden State Warriors vs the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Their were rumors of guard DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors returning home to LA to play with the Lakers.

A few days ago those rumors seem to have disintegrated as he wants to stay in Toronto being that they were 2 games away from the NBA Finals.

Another player who the Lakers have been rumored to want to go after is Kevin Durant from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He and his current team OKC had a great 7 game series against the defending champion Warriors.

Now that he and his team have missed a trip to the Finals once again, there has been talk about will Durant and Westbrook stay with OKC, go to a different team together, or each go their own ways?

As of right now no one will know because their game 7 loss is so fresh, he is just embracing and consoling his teammates.

As he states in this video he has not even thought of his options in free agency.

Will he stay with OKC in the West like Derozaon is doing in the East knowing that he and this team were one game away from the Finals or will he decide to leave to play for another team to help them win a championship.

Durant is the best shooter on the Thunder right now and all critics and fans know it.

All his current team needs is another consistent shooter because when he is double teamed and a teammate is open they need to be able to knock down their shots and OKC doesn’t have many players like that only Waiters and Morrow.

Will he go to a team that is similar like OKC in that they have the positions already filled by good players and like OKC are looking for a shooter?

Durant is the player that his team counts on to make shots.

He did have a personal 7-0 run in the fourth quarter of the Western Conference Finals to bring the deficit down to four.

With Derozan not coming over to LA is this the time for the lakeshow to recruit Durant?

Knowing teams will be selling their pitches to recruit him to their team, should the Lakers do the same as they have cap space and the number 2 pick in the NBA draft this year.

If they are going to recruit him they will have to give up their number 2 overall pick and a role player to acquire him.

Another option they have is to acquire him when he hits the free agency marker and they can just give him the max contract with their $60 plus million cap space they have.

The Lakers have a void at the guard position where they are missing a player who can shoot the ball greatly and consistently.

Durant would fill that void of a player who is a shooter which Kobe left when he retired.

If Durant does choose to play for Los Angeles would he attract Westbrook to join him as well.

Hypothetically lets say this happens would this affect D’Angelo Russells performance and thoughts about the Lakers organization as he was the number 2 overall pick last year and their point guard?

This would be good competition for D’Angelo and make their point guard position set.

How could the Lakers make this happen? They would either have to deliver out two max contracts, but would that ruin the chemistry of the young core players on the team, who are earning their place on the team to have a max contract like D’Angelo?

On the other side the good thing is this could improve the teams overall skill and make everyone better, then playoffs here we come!

The Lakers are fun team to play with and Kevin is a fun person to play with, hence means Durant is   a perfect fit for the Lakers.

Next: Should Lakers Trade Their Draft Pick?

The reality of the situation is that the Lakers are best off keeping their second overall pick, acquiring Kevin Durant to be that shooter they need, and develop their team of young core players and Durant could be one the leaders on the team also with playoff experience.
