Wade Phillips will now be the coordinator for one of the league’s more interesting defenses.

It was a heck of a day to be hired by Los Angeles football teams, with Wade Phillips making the list.

Formerly with the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, Phillips will join the Los Angeles Rams.

This comes the same day as head coaching announcements for both the Rams and Chargers.

Phillips brings plenty of experience to the table — that’s not the issue. What really matters with this hire is that the Rams find someone that can make them a threat.

Tapping the assistant coach of the year from 2015 wasn’t a bad move.

While the team aimed for youth and energy at head coach, choosing experience was their best bet on defense. Utilizing stars like Aaron Donald is a must if the Rams are to compete anytime soon.

The team started 3-1 before losing eleven of their final twelve games.

Defense was key in losing leads of all sizes. Under Phillips, it’s not a guarantee that that specific problem will go away — but it’s worth a shot.

It’s starting to seem a lot sunnier in Los Angeles with Jeff Fisher gone, too. The ex-Rams head coach has yet to find a gig elsewhere, and for obvious reasons.

Getting rid of the coach tied for the worst record of all-time wasn’t really negotiable anymore.

Even so, Phillips’ experience includes being one of the masterminds behind the Broncos’ championship defense two seasons ago.

It was one that carried a weaker quarterback in Peyton Manning, so that could take pressure off of Jared Goff immediately.

If the defense can perform anywhere near where he had the Broncos, the Rams will be alright.

It’s refreshing to see that the front office is responding to the needs of the team and isn’t tone deaf.
