Here’s what the news this morning means for Jeanie Buss.

If the Los Angeles Lakers were a Hollywood soap opera, it would be about a father, his daughter and son, daughter’s fiancé, and the adopted son who’s star burned brighter than the son.

In an unprecedented move, the daughter has taken over. Jeanie Buss asserted herself as the power within the Lakers organization pulling off a coup that is going to resonate throughout the NBA.

Tuesday morning the Lakers front office was remade and restructured for the first time since Jerry West left in the summer of 2000.

On one fell swoop Jeannie dismissed her  brother Executive Vice President Jim Buss, longtime general manager Mitch Kupchak, and longtime head of team PR John Black.  Not only did Jeannie do this but she elevated Lakers great Magic Johnson to Head of Basketball Operations.

Make no mistake this move means that the real power in the organization sits with Jeanie Buss. Her fellow owners may be her siblings (including the brother she just fired) but the Lakers are Jeanie Buss team.

It started with her bringing back Magic Johnson as her advisor earlier this month. From that time on many wondered if Jim Buss and Kupchak’s days were numbered.

For Jeanie, who has been the business face of the franchise since 90’s, hiring Magic back was a clear indication that she would no longer stay out of basketball operations.

Even with her other siblings contributing in different ways to the team, make no mistake from now on major decisions will go through Jeannie Buss.

There is no question that jewel franchise of the NBA and Los Angeles is being run by a powerful woman who isn’t afraid to make her team great again.
