As the Lakers sign David Nwaba, we get a look at the intentions of the new front office.

The move to sign David Nwaba comes as the Los Angeles front office prepares for an attempted return to glory. Multiple free agents are already on their list, but David Nwaba was a smaller pickup with plenty of upside.

It has only been since February that Nwaba was promoted from the D-League. After being given the opportunity by the Lakers, a decision had to be made on whether or not it was worth it to extend Nwaba via contract.

According to a report from ESPN on the signing, the team was pretty impressed.

Per the report:

"Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka announced the move Tuesday after Nwaba’s second 10-day contract expired.Nwaba was promoted from the Lakers’ D-League affiliate on Feb. 28, and he immediately caught on with standout defense and steady play. He is averaging 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in 10 games for the Lakers, including two starts."

The reason that this move was the right move for the team is simple. It keeps the core intact while giving a new face some room to grow.

Nwaba can become even more valuable to the Lakers if he improves through the rest of this season along with next year. Given that the Lakers may want to make a trade happen, he could become irreplaceable as part of a package.

It’s not that the front office should always be thinking of later trade moves, but basketball is also business. Magic Johnson has made it crystal clear about where he intends to have the Lakers sooner rather than later.\
