"Howard and Paul can become free agents after this season by opting out of their contracts next July, putting pressure on Orlando and New Orleans to get something in return before the perennial All-Stars walk away for nothing.Orlando isn’t as desperate to unload Howard and would ask for quite the return in a trade with the Lakers, wanting Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant, according to an official familiar with Orlando’s thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly. He appeared to be joking. Maybe."

"This is what the Lakers do. This is who the Lakers are. Nobody thought they could land Shaquille O’Neal and they did. Nobody thought they could trade for Gasol and they did. Whenever the Lakers have needed a jolt , the Buss family has given them one. When they open training camp this weekend, they will need a Texas-sized shock to the system."

"Some teams were handed three back-to-back-to-backs, so the Lakers are fortunate to be left with just this one. Bynum will only be out for seven days on the calendar, but that still puts more early miles on the legs of Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, for the second straight year. As such, acquiring another big for Mike Brown to utilize is a stated priority for GM Mitch Kupchak during training camp."

"Ben Howland is not willing to give up on Reeves Nelson. Yet. But UCLA’s basketball coach, speaking in a monotone and occasionally clenching a fist, said Tuesday that Nelson’s behavior lately, especially an incident of laughing on the bench during a recent loss to Texas, caused him to suspend the junior forward for a second time this season."

"UCLA has again refocused the search for its next football coach. The Bruins were told Monday that it won’t be Al Golden, who indicated he was not interested in the job, according to a person close to the situation who is not authorized to speak on the subject. UCLA has now turned its attention to former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora Jr., according to other people familiar with the search."

"Though all of our moaning about Aaron Harang and the rest of Ned Colletti’s inexplicable moves has been, uh, “fun”, I guess, there’s still a few more days of the winter meetings, and that means rumors."

"After tonight’s game, the L.A. Kings are the worst offensive team in the National Hockey League. Let that sink in. Anze Kopitar, Mike Richards (for all but 2 games), Simon Gagne, Justin Williams, Dustin Brown, Dustin Penner, Jack Johnson, and Drew Doughty and we are 30th out of 30 teams in goals per game."
