There’s a New Team in LA: The Los Angeles Clippers
By Jonas Brock
As a longtime Clipper fan I have had to deal with watching the Lakers smash on the Clippers for as long as I can remember. Throughout history the Clippers hold an abysmal record of 48-141 against their city rivals, and Laker fans won’t let Clipper fans forget that. I understand that that the Lakers have rings, and Hall of Famers but I am not one to live in the past. Laker fans can talk all they want about what they have won but now that the Clippers are on the rise, Laker fans are showing their true colors.
Ever since the addition of CP3, Chauncey and Caron to an already young and upcoming roster, it seems as though Laker fans feel threatened by that fact that the Clippers may for once end up having a better season than the hometown favorites. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily believe that the Clips will end up having a better record, but there is a good chance of it happening.
When looking at the starting 5 on both sides, one can argue that the Clippers’ starting lineup is better than the Lakers. Clippers: CP3, Billups, Butler, Griffin, and Jordan. Lakers: Fisher, Kobe, Barnes, Gasol, Bynum. There have been polls across the country on what would be someone’s preferable starting 5, but here is why I would take the Clips.
Many say you cannot base an entire season on a preseason game, and I completely agree with them, but that does not mean you can’t take anything away from it. As the game went on, we learned a whole bunch. Besides LA getting it’s first real taste of the skill Chris Paul has, here are some other things that I took away from the Clippers’ win: Chauncey and Caron can still shoot the ball exceptionally well. Deandre is going to be a monster in the paint and off the boards. And if anyone knows the work ethic of Blake Griffin, everyone will know that he is going to come into this season bigger, stronger and better than he was last season, he just needs to improve on his jump shot. Now another thing I learned from watching that game is that the starting 5 is not going to need to carry the team.
There are a bunch of guys that are going to be able to come off the bench and be a real assets to the team. There has been speculation about them having too many guards and I can see where the critics are coming from but I don’t really see this as a problem. Mo Williams will be great off the bench and will also serve as a mentor to younger guys like Eric Bledsoe. Randy Foye has had a great training camp and will be great in either the 2 or 3 slot when needed. But the biggest surprise I believe will be Trey Thompkins, the Clippers 2nd Round Pick, who has also had a very impressive camp. Brian Cook is another big man who may not be the greatest player but his experience would be great if the Clippers so happen to end up in the playoffs.
The Clippers have everything they need to be a dominant team this year and although they may not win a title, I believe that they will finally end up with a better record than their so called “Big Brother” the Lakers.
