4. Mayweather Can’t Come To The Party Overweight

In the NFL it’s every inch counts. In boxing it’s every pound counts. Every pound whether it is up or down counts.

When Mayweather fought Marquez, Marquez never fought above 135 lbs. This fight was schedule at a negotiated weight of 144 lbs.

Marquez weighed in 142 lbs and Mayweather came in 146 lbs, two pounds over. Mayweather ended up paying Marquez $600,000 for his overweight, $300,000 for each pound.

It was later discovered Mayweather negotiated and changed the contract to allow a welterweight limit of 147 lbs to avoid paying an additional fine to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, a few days prior to the weigh in.

Adding, ESPN boxing writer Dan Rafael also reported, no one was to speak about contract weight during the promotion of the fight.

In the business of boxing Mayweather wins again. On the boxing side he gets a zero, making weight is part of the game.

Now using the Canelo Alvarez – Mayweather fight as a reference. The Canelo camp allowed Mayweather to negotiate a catch weight of 152 lbs. Canelo a slower and bigger fighter agreed under contractual details he would drop weight for a big pay-day and a chance at beating the best fighter out there.

No way, an inexperienced Canelo and camp should have allowed Mayweather to fight at a comfortable weigh in weight of 150 1/2  lbs. For Canelo it was impossible for him to fight at 150 or 151 but stated he wanted to make the fight so he agreed on 152 lbs and was forced to keep quiet about it.

The Pac-Man camp won’t allow any weight issues to occur, 147 lbs it is.
