This was one of the most bizarre seasons that the NHL has ever seen.

Not only did the Los Angeles Kings — a No. 8 seed out of the Western Conference — make the Stanley Cup Final, but their opponent would be the East’s No. 6 seed in the New Jersey Devils.

This was the ultimate underdog showdown.

  • On top of that, both teams played a very similar style of the game.

    Beat up or beat down.

Both the Kings and the Devils either played extra physical and wore out opponents with their massive amounts of strength and sustainability or they routed the team opposite them.

New Jersey had no problem with the East, going as far as to even top the high-ranked New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals while the Kings manhandled the Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference Finals.

In 2012, the Kings had the ultimate road team, going a perfect 8-0 away from Staples Center before clashing with New Jersey.

The Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, and Phoenix (now Arizona) Coyotes — the No. 1, 2, and three teams in the West that year, respectively — didn’t stand a chance against the Kings.

Momentum swung so heavily in favor of the Kings that the Devils’ incredible run as a six seed was completely overshadowed.

    You don’t hear that often.

Especially with teams that make it as far as the Final.

The Kings took the Stanley Cup in six games, which was the first ever title in franchise history.

And yes, the series ended in New Jersey — where else?
