Lance Stephenson can ball.
How else do you get the nickname ‘Born Ready’?
There is not a question about the talent or versatility of Stephenson, but issues have emerged with his ability to focus and bring his A-game consistently.
Stephenson, who had a rocky stop in Charlotte, scored only eight points per game while shooting under 20% from beyond the arc for the Hornets.
This is a major contrast to the Stephenson that averaged 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists per game in his last playoff appearance with the Indiana Pacers.
With the Clippers, Stephenson has a golden opportunity to contribute in a system more conducive to his skill set.
While at Indiana Stephenson was not called on to be a focal point in the offense. He was able to come into games and play with high energy on the offensive end while guarding a primary scorer on the defensive end.
In addition to having a reasonable role on the floor, Stephenson was also thriving in a functioning environment with Larry Bird at arms reach.
He has the opportunity to recapture this with Doc Rivers and the Clippers.
There is a strong leadership dynamic already in play with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Stephenson will also be under the wing of one of the most respected coaches in the NBA.
These factors are paramount for a player that has a chance to add depth and versatility to the Clippers bench.
Lance Stephenson will compete, but it has to be under the right circumstances. With the Clippers, he’ll be in an environment where he can thrive and be a major contributor to the team’s championship hopes.
