This guy needs no introduction, as he is the one who changed hockey in Southern California forever. Known by the nickname ” The Great One”, he is simply known as Wayne Gretzky.
Gretzky’s time in LA began in the 1988 offseason when he was involved, in what was perhaps one of the most shocking trades in the history of the NHL.
After winning four Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers, an emotional Gretzky announced his trade to LA.
Although he came to the Kings during his prime, Gretzky put up 918 points in 539 games played.
Gretzky helped bring the Kings close to their first Stanley Cup in the 1992-93 season, however fell short in the Finals.
Unfortunately, the Kings never found the same success afterwards during the rest of Gretzky’s time in LA.
Gretzky is still considered the greatest hockey player of all time by not only Kings fans, but the fans worldwide.
Gretzky helped the Kings step into the national spotlight in hockey.
When Gretzky played, the Kings saw sold-out crowds at the Great Western Forum. Gretzky’s impact on California helped set the foundation for the two other teams to be formed — the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks.
Teams along the nations Sun Belt region were also formed in the wake of Gretzky’s impact in LA.
