Prior to the game, Bryant requested that there be no more on-court gifts or acknowledgements from opposing teams regarding his retirement, stating simply that he did not want to take away from the game.
In a subdued manner, Atlanta played a short tribute to Bryant before the second quarter that ended with Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins stating “I’ll see you in the Hall.”
Reports have stated that the Hawks had planned to do the tribute before the game with more fan-fare similar to the Wizards prior to Bryant’s request.
The Black Mamba pitched in 14 points in his final night at Philips Arena. Although far from a dominant night, he made three consecutive shots from beyond the arc that ignited the crowd and acknowledged it by holding up three fingers.
Atlanta would go on to win the game, however rookie D’Angelo Russell had his first career double-double in the Lakers effort.
