What Houston and Los Angeles was to the 1980’s was echoed by the style of play and sheer dominance put out by the Spurs and Lakers to kick off the 2000’s.
Gregg Popovich has been able to establish a monotone but effective way to play basketball, and it contrasted pretty sharply with that place and time.
Still does now, but the Lakers have fallen off the radar since.
Most noticeably, of all the great playoff battles, the one between the Spurs and Lakers that’ll never be forgotten was the miracle shot in 2004 provided by Derek Fisher with less than half of a second remaining.
The shot followed a ridiculous fade away by Tim Duncan, and at that point, everyone in San Antonio thought the game was over.
Los Angeles had other plans.
