Jared Goff will begin the 2016-17 season as the starting quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams.

Jared Goff got the hard part out of the way, working hard to impress the Los Angeles Rams enough to be picked at the top of the draft on Thursday night — now comes the due diligence.

Case Keenum was long thought to be the potential quarterback answer before the blockbuster trade with the Tennessee Titans that moved the franchise up to the top pick.

Keenum was by no means the likely long term answer,

Being in a place where they could compare, analyze, and eventually select whichever quarterback they felt was the answer gave the Rams the leverage they were hoping for that came with the epic re-location that was starting to settle in.

According to a report on NFL.com, it’s clear that Los Angeles expects Jared Goff to be mentally ready to go when their season kicks off in a road game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Also per the report, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher had some strong words regarding the young quarterback.

When asked how he felt Goff would handle the pressures of starting on opening night, Fisher replied by saying, “if I had concerns about whether Jared [Goff] could handle this, I wouldn’t be talking about Jared [Goff] right now. He can handle it.”

While confidence is important, it’s an absolute must for Goff not to worry himself too much when under pressure right away.

If he’s able to win in San Francisco, he’d actually be the first quarterback of his kind to do so.

Other quarterbacks who were thrown right in the fire after being picked at the top of their draft class include Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, and Jameis Winston.

None of those guys had strong opening performances, but they found their place later on — we can safely expect that kind of season and career from Goff if he remains healthy.

Health issues obviously derailed any high hopes at quarterback the Rams had last time around, as their former first round pick in Sam Bradford is now with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Who, ironically enough, might have picked his replacement by taking Carson Wentz via the second pick in the draft.

Goff is a sound pick for the Rams, with his main focus needed to be his composure.

With many cases, rookie quarterbacks let the nerves get to them at some point in their first season — with some incidents stretching further than just the first time around.

Goff can’t let that get to him if he expects to excel in Los Angeles.

It is the right decision to give him the reigns this early on, though — if not, it would definitely raise questions about the intent of the front office moving forward.

There’s no way the team trades away the kinds of picks they did to the Titans to grab a quarterback that they want to just fade into the background.

For lack of a better word, and whether the Rams like to admit it or not, Goff is their fresh franchise face from here on out.
