Brian Shaw is an assistant coaching candidate that has drawn the more direct interest from the team and from Luke Walton personally.

Shaw was part of the coaching staff in Los Angeles for seven seasons spanning 2004-2011, making six playoff appearances, three trips to the NBA Finals, and bringing home two Larry O’Brien trophies.

Also taking the reigns in Denver from 2013-15, Shaw has plenty of experience running and helping to run a professional basketball team — a major reason for Walton’s endorsement.

In his time with the Nuggets, Shaw coached through two tough losing seasons, with records of 36-46 to show for his full regular season with the team before posting a follow up 20-39 record before being relieved of his duties.

While Shaw, like Bickerstaff, doesn’t have a great track record as a head coach, it’s important to remember that the top of the food chain is not where either of them hope to end up — that’s Walton’s job.

Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal were Shaw’s teammates during the three-peat run spanning 2000-02, with Shaw’s personal career as a player ending in 2003.

Combining his expertise with someone like J.B. Bickerstaff could prove instrumental in not only establishing a long-term coaching solution in Los Angeles, but an added bonus in the pursuit of any free agents the Lakers would, should, or could be interested in acquiring sometime in the future.
