Lakers NBA Draft News: A look at previous picks

Derek Fisher
The Lakers 1st round pick in the 1996 draft was not Kobe Bryant — the Hornets picked him and then the Lakers traded for those draft rights — Derek Fisher was actually their 1st rd pick that year as he was taken with the 24th pick.
Despite being less celebrated than Bryant, Fisher carved out his own niche with Lakers providing leadership and toughness.
In the first eight years with the Lakers. Fisher would provide clutch three-point shooting performances including a dazzling display during the Lakers 2001 championship run.
Fisher would hit 51 percent from beyond the arc, including 6 of 8 in the title clincher.
Over two stints in his Lakers career, Fisher would win five titles (matching Bryant), but his most memorable moment came in 2004 during the a playoff match up against the San Antonio Spurs in a critical Game 5 with the series tied at two game apiece.
Down by one with 0.4 seconds showing on the clock, Fisher hit a miracle shot putting the Lakers up 3 games to 2 in the eventual 6 game series win.
