Walton and the Lakers had to make sure to resign Jordan Clarkson as he provided so much for them with his performances in the 2016 NBA regular season and is one of they young core players on the team.

They had to wait to July 1 along with all the other NBA teams, as that is when the fist day of free agency was.

Their was rumors of the New York Knicks drawing interest in Clarkson.

The Lakers had to pay some of their players first and make room for any players that they realistically could get in free agency. Once they did that then they were able to resign Jordan Clarkson which is a big move for the Lakers because Russell and Clarkson worked so well together, they didn’t want to get rid of that chemistry.

To build off that chemistry the Lakers needed to make some good moves in free agency, not involving their young core of players on the team. By not involving their young core of players, I mean not trading them or losing them.
