LLWS 2016 saw Hawaii and Southern California shine the most on day one.

Six teams of fourteen kids ages 11 to 13 representing their regions, begun their journey at a chance of representing the West in this year’s Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

These teams consist of six regions in Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, No. Cal, So. Cal, and Utah that will compete in a double elimination tournament.

The teams that represent each region go as follows:

Cactus Foothills South Little League – Cave Creek, Arizona

Central East Maui Little League – Wailuku, Hawaii

Mountain Ridge Litlle League – Las Vegas, Nevada

Vacaville Central Little League – Vacaville, California

Park View Little League – Chula Vista, California

Snow Canyon Little League – Santa Clara, Utah

Four of the six teams kicked off play Sunday with the bright sun bouncing off the grass of Al Houghton Stadium, as the the San Bernardino Mounatins draped in the background.

As Hawaii surfed right past Nevada in the first game of the tournament with 8-0 shutout win.

Led by Keoni Painter who limited Neveda to only 3 hits in 4 innings, with Danelle Daniels bringing his offensive presence with 3 hits, 1 RBI, and scoring 3 runs.

Hawaii will continue play Monday against Utah in the winner bracket, as Nevada waits to see if they’ll be playing either So. Cal, or Arizona in the first game of the losing bracket.

The second game consisted of the two California powerhouse teams going at it with the winner becoming the favorite to win the tournament.

As the winner of this game usually becomes the front runner to represent the West, but is to early to tell.

What didn’t come early was the wait for both California teams to get on the scoreboard.

Ali Camarillo got the game started with a hard hit through the glove of the shortstop for an error, and ended up scoring later in the inning to give So. Cal the lead, but didn’t last long. As No. Cal tied the game in the same inning from an RBI single from Kyler Abramowicz.

So. Cal then retook the lead with a homer from Daniel Leon in top of third, but No. Cal responded in the bottom of the fourth with a single from Sean Riley that brought in two runners to take a 3-2 lead.

From there, the So. Cal offense was shutdown by Gregory Ryan, striking out five batters before he gave up a walk to the tying run, Ali Camarillo, who scored the following at bat with an RBI double from Lucas Marrujo.

The game ended up going to extra innings. but only took 4 extra innings for So. Cal to get the win.

After So. Cal broke out in the top of the tenth with two outs, and went on a 15-run stretch with Lucas Marrujo kicking it off with a two-run homer.
