Once positioned for top seed in the conference, the Clippers are now in the three-spot, but are only two games ahead of the seventh-seeded Utah Jazz.
The moment that best exemplified the Clipper self-immolation was the Doc Rivers blowup in Brooklyn. A not-wholly-undeserved tantrum that nevertheless undermined his characteristic poise and equanimity.
Danny Ferry thought being a Clipper was so bad that he skipped off to Italy rather than play for the organization that drafted him.
Even their fans have had it bad.
Clipper Darrell, a two-decade season ticket-holder, was asked by the team to refrain from using the name “Clipper” in conjunction with his proper name.
It is tough to escape stigma and to avoid the labels that have stuck to this second-tier organization as their counterparts have reached obscene heights.
Overhauling the uniforms was a good start, but they were still too Clipper-ish.
Same colors, same name.
I realize that history determines the present, but the Clippers should have destroyed the name that became a national punchline.
Because, otherwise, as Clipper Friend replied:
They can win 50 straight, it won’t mean anything until they do something in the playoffs.
