The new Rams coach will be Sean McVay — did they make the right move?

After an exhaustive search spanning at least eight candidates, the Los Angeles Rams have chosen 30-year old Sean McVay to be their head coach.

McVay, most recently offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, has no head coaching experience.

He has football lineage, however. As he is the grandson of John McVay, who teamed with Bill Walsh to build the 49ers into a powerhouse in the 1980s.

The Rams woeful offense should benefit from this hire, as McVay is considered one of the brightest offensive minds in the sport. The Redskins were 23rd in the league in yards when McVay took over in 2014, and finished the 2016 season ranked third.

McVay attended Miami of Ohio, graduating in 2008 and moving immediately to Jon Gruden’s staff in Tampa Bay. In 2009, he was an assitant coach for the Florida Tuskers in the UFL.

He returned to the NFL with the Redskins in 2010. There, he was hired as assistant tight ends coach.

In 2011, he was promoted to tight ends coach. Eventually, he made the leap to offensive coordinator in 2014.

There is a difficult road ahead for McVay, as the Rams ranked last in yards and points scored.

The team also has not reached the playoffs since 2004.

McVay replaces Jeff Fisher, who was fired with three games remaining this season before John Fassel was named interim coach to finish out the schedule.

The Rams completed a disastrous return season to Los Angeles with four wins against 12 losses.

History appears to be on McKay’s side, however.

The elder McVay and Walsh worked together to build one of the strongest dynasties in NFL history.

McVay presided over five Super Bowl-winning teams.
