Following the Anthony Lynn hire, the Los Angeles Chargers need him to succeed.

If new Los Angeles Chargers (that still sounds weird) head coach is going Anthony Lynn to succeed in his first head coaching gig he’s going to have to play to his strength.

As a player, Lynn was a journey man running back who parlayed that into a coaching career.

It has taken him from organizations like the Broncos, Cowboys, Jets and eventually the Bills where he ended up as interim coach when the team fired Rex Ryan.

Except for his first job with the Broncos, Lynn has always been a running backs coach and it’s translated into success.  Under his coaching running backs have rushed for over 1,000 yards nine times in 14 seasons as a running backs coach.

While Lynn was again turning out a thousand yard rusher in Buffalo, in San Diego the Chargers were dismal rushing team as they placed 26th in yards and yard per attempt.

With such a bad rushing attack the burden of the offense was too much for Phillip Rivers to bear.

A more balanced attack will open up the offense and keep teams from teeing off on Philip Rivers.

On the surface the move to hire Lynn looks like a historical pick. As he is the first African-American coach in franchise history.  But below the surface the hire is more strategic as Lynn may have the right philosophy for a team moving to new city in need of immediate wins.
