Lakers News: Boston makes history with win over Los Angeles
By Mary Coyne
In a serendipitous matchup, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics entered Friday’s game tied with exactly 3,252 regular season wins.
Meaning, whoever won would mark an important milestone.
Sadly, the Lakers lost and, for the first time since the 2000-01 season, they do not lead the NBA in all-time wins.
The team played like history was on the line but in the end, it wasn’t enough in their 113-107 loss to their longtime rivals.
The game got off to a quick start with the Celtics jumping to a 7-0 lead.
But the Lakers responded with a 7-2 run.
D’Angelo Russell and Nick Young combined to make four straight 3-pointers in the first quarter and it felt like the Lakers might be channeling some of that Showtime magic.
But just like they did in Washington the night before, the Lakers struggled in the second quarter making only one-third of their shots.
They outscored the Celtics in both the third and fourth quarters, but it was not enough to overcome Celtic MVP candidate, Isaiah Thomas, who scored 17 of his 38 points in the 4th period.
The Lakers were led by Lou Williams who had 21 points and Larry Nancy Jr., who added 18.
In a positive sign for the Lakers, Nance Jr. is starting to look like his old self again. Friday’s game was his sixth game back after missing 16 because of a bone bruise in his left knee.
Nick Young finished with five three-pointers and 17 points.
D’Angelo Russell added 20, with six assists and six rebounds with only two turnovers.
Brandon Ingram had a solid performance with 14 points.
The Celtics were led by Thomas’ 38.
Jae Crowder had 18 points and Jaylen Brown added 12 for Boston.
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 17-36.
They have the weekend off before they lace up again to take on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Monday.
Next: Can the Lakers trade for Nerlens Noel?
And if they win that one, and the Celtics lose to the Clippers on Sunday, then we’ll be having this history-making conversation once again.
