Dodgers Preview 2017: The Pitching Rotation
By Evan Lovett
What Could Be
Hyun-Jin Ryu was fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2013, finishing the season with an impressive 3.00 ERA to go along with his 14 wins. He followed that up with another 14-win campaign in 2014, and a slightly increased but still competent 3.38 ERA.
Then the wheels fell off. Ryu has never been healthy since, missing all of 2015 and posting only 4 2/3 innings in 2016.
When he is healthy – and that’s a big if – he is a solid, consistent, workmanlike pitcher that projects as a mid-rotation guy. Ryu says he is pain-free this season and makes his first start Saturday at Camelback Ranch.
If Ryu stays healthy, this could be a coup for the Dodgers, who could effectively use a six-man rotation to alleviate his workload.
