Los Angeles Angels: A Bleak Preview for the Starting Rotation
By Evan Lovett
Nick Tropeano, Andrew Heaney, Alex Meyer
Perhaps, for the Angels and their fan base, the future is the fountain of optimism. With 26-year old Nick Tropeano throwing again after a Tommy John surgery, visions of the pitcher that pitched to a 3.56 ERA in 13 starts during 2016 could lay the groundwork for the future. Andrew Heaney, a one-time prospect that was traded straight-up for Howie Kendrick, also had Tommy John surgery but also is throwing – his goal is to return this season. The 25-year old showed flashes of brilliance in 2015, notching six wins in his tenure with the Angels while notching a 1.20 WHIP.
And Alex Meyer, the hulking, 6’9″ right-hander, who is prone to injury tweaked his delivery in a way that is supposed to put less stress on his shoulder. In his brief stints in the major leagues between the Minnesota Twins and the Angels, he struck out 32 batters in 28 innings, a harbinger of good things to come for Angels fans. That said, with all three pitchers in their impending youth movement being waylaid by injuries, this fountain may need to be replenished before the Angels can really look forward to the future.
