Alex Verdugo – Outfield

At 20 years old, Verdugo thrust himself to the forefront of conversations regarding which Dodgers’ prospect would be called up first after an inspiring performance in the World Baseball Classic. Facing top pitching from around the world, Verdugo’s prepared for the inevitable call to the big leagues.

Verdugo excels at every level, having compiled a .302 batting average with a .791 OPS in his three minor league seasons, despite being an average of three years younger than his peers at each stop.

That combination of youth and experience makes Verdugo a tantalizing prospect for the club that can use Verdugo’s blend of hitting ability and defensive competence. Verdugo puts the ball in play often and has upside power and deceptive speed, having stolen 27 bases in his minor league career.

He plays any position in the outfield and has a rocket arm. As a pitcher, in high school, he was clocked in the mid-90’s during high school and does not get overmatched.

Though he will likely begin the year at AA Tulsa, the continued physical maturation of Verdugo coupled with his professional-level fortnight in the WBC could augur well for his chances to reach the big leagues this year. And watch out, because once he gets there – he’s going to stick.
