2017 NFL Draft: Chargers Seven Round Mock Draft
By Jason Reed
In the second round with the 38th overall pick, the Chargers selected an offensive tackle out of Utah in the likes of Garett Bolles. The Chargers have historically struggled in protecting quarterback Phillip Rivers, and although steps have been made to improve their protection drafting Bolles in the second round would be the perfect icing on the cake.
Bolles is a pretty big guy that has a surprising amount of athleticism. Despite having a six-foot-five frame weighing 297 pounds, Bolles ran a 4.95 40 yard dash. I know that does not seem great on the surface, but when compared to pro bowler Travis Frederick’s 5.58, who is similar in size, it is all the more impressive. An NFC scout even went as far as saying:
"Most athletic offensive lineman I’ve done since I took over this area of the country. He’s also mean on the field, which you love. I’m projecting him to get stronger once he locks into an NFL strength-and-conditioning program."
In the same quote, the scout went on to say Bolles’ biggest issue is that he is not fully developed. However, give the freshman some time to grow into an NFL system and he will thrive greatly. Putting Bolles in the Chargers system alongside tackle Russel Okung and he will certainly thrive. Selecting Bolles in the second round seems to be the perfect steal the Chargers need.
