2017 NFL Draft: Chargers Seven Round Mock Draft
By Jason Reed
With the departure of Manti T’eo, the Chargers certainly have a gap to fill in the linebacker position. Although a sixth-round draft pick likely won’t be the kind of option the Bolts need, in this stage of the draft teams often draft guys that they see can have potential. In this instance, Brown provides that, while he will not be a starting guy anytime soon, he could blossom into a decent player.
Likely, if the Chargers do select a linebacker this late in the draft they won’t see the time of day on the first defensive unit. Yes, they could eventually get there as time goes on, but the Chargers are not looking for someone to help now. Brown definitely could not match up with the play of these professional players, especially being undersized, but his athleticism gives him a chance to shine.
Brown likely would serve as a member of the special teams unit for the Chargers, and if he can prove to be a playmaker alongside his hard hitting abilities he could earn some playing time down the road. Brown has shined in the special teams unit at UCLA, so adding him may be an easy choice for the Chargers.
Sure, chances are that Brown likely would not have much of an impact outside of special teams, but that potential is there. Heck, even if he is limited to just seeing time on the kickoff, he will be a leader of that special teams unit.
