What This Means

Going thorough those two arguments is an interesting digest. While the numbers point to him being on par with some of the elites in his position, what will ultimately determine his role moving forward is the upcoming draft.

If the Lakers pick up a point guard out of the top prospects they’re considering at this point, that could mean a number of things.

First, we could see Russell change positions. Luke Walton experimented with it briefly this season, but a long term spot at shooting guard could be in the mix.

Second, it could be that extra gear the Lakers have been missing. Russell is a score first point guard, which is the opposite of top prospect point guard Lonzo Ball. The ex-UCLA phenom has a pass-first approach that would help get Russell the shots he needs to be effective.

Third, it could mean growth not only for Russell, but also for Jordan Clarkson. As another huge piece of the young core, Clarkson’s electric play off the bench to start this year alongside Lou Williams was great to watch.

The hope is for that to continue, with an improved record and chase for the playoffs also in mind.
