The Dodgers are officially the most popular team in Los Angeles.

According to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times, a study revealed that despite the Lakers’ recent championship pedigree, the Dodgers remain the team most closely tied to the fabric of Los Angeles.

The Dodgers received 36% of the vote and the Lakers received 35%. The next most popular team was the Clippers with 7%. The Kings and Angels each received 6%. The Galaxy and Rams followed with 5% apiece. The Sparks received 0.2% of the vote.

The vote concluded in January, which correlates with the Chargers move to the city – thus the team was not considered in the poll. The poll also did not include the Anaheim Ducks.

Peering closer at the data in today’s L.A. Times print edition, some of the demographic information is interesting.

With baseball’s aging demographic, the popularity of the Dodgers over the Lakers amongst the ‘Silent Generation’ was narrower than expected (Dodgers 40%, Lakers 38%), while Baby Boomers select the Dodgers handily (Dodgers 36%, Lakers 27%).

Generation X has the Lakers and Dodgers tied with 35% apiece. Perhaps most surprisingly, Millennials prefer the Lakers by a slim margin. The gap there is only one percentage point, 38 – 37%. In all instances, there was no other team receiving more than 10% of the vote.
