Rams Rumors: New free agent targets after the 2017 NFL Draft
By Jason Reed
Jason McCourty – CB
The Rams are alarmingly thin at the cornerback position, and that is an understatement. Many expected the team to address this issue in the NFL Draft, perhaps spending their second round selection on a starting caliber corner. Instead, the Rams went for a tight end in the second round and failed to even address the issue of their corners next season.
The team’s best corner, Trumaine Johnson, could even end up departing from Los Angeles in the very near future. Los Angeles had to slap the franchise tag on Johnson, making him the highest paid corner; making a modest $16.7 million. The bottom line is that the Rams need help at cornerback, and Jason McCourty is one of the few options left.
Don’t get this twisted, McCourty is in no way a game changer that will instantly boost the Rams into playoff contention. Instead, he is a solid corner that can line up nicely against number two receivers and could give the Rams the much-needed depth that the fans are seeking. At only 29 years old McCourty fits the young narrative of this team and would be a fairly cheap pick up.
Out of all the available corners left in free agency, McCourty should be the first guy on the Rams’ radar. With two interceptions last year, and consistently floating under a breakout year, the Rams could find something special with this acquisition.
