2. Willie Calhoun – 2B

  • .313 BA, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 SB (AAA Oklahoma City)

Willie Calhoun is perhaps the most overlooked prospect in the Dodgers farm system, and it should certainly not be that way. Perhaps because his size may limit him in the future, Calhoun is not often talked about as one of the best prospects in baseball. Yes, my fellow Dodger fans know and love Calhoun, but outside of our circle, there is not much known about the second baseman.

Calhoun brings an interesting blend of quickness and power to the Dodgers farm system. In 2016 playing at AA Tulsa Calhoun managed to slug 27 home runs, bringing in 88 runs batted in, however not stealing any bases. While he may not demonstrate stolen base potential, Calhoun has the bat quickness and pure agility that would make him bounce around the MLB field.

I think a perfect comparison to Willie Calhoun is Dodgers outfielder, Andrew Toles. Toles is perhaps a tad quicker, however, they both have similar power ability with Calhoun arguably being the better pure hitter. With MLB Pipeline stating that Calhoun may be better suited in left field, this would give the Dodgers a carbon copy of Andrew Toles.

However, instead of bringing in another Andrew Toles the Dodgers must be patient with Calhoun and his call up. Second base is blocked until the end of next season by Logan Forsythe, and Justin Turner at third is locked down for four years. We may see Calhoun called up when the rosters expand to hit off the bench, but we may not see him as an everyday Dodger for quite some time.
