Comebacks in the 2000’s

2006 Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres

In the middle of a pennant race against the Padres,  the Dodgers found themselves down 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning, no one expected what would happen next.  Jeff Kent started the ninth by hitting a solo shot, then J.D. drew the Dodgers closer with a home run of his own.  The Padres called on their all-time closer Trevor Hoffman to get the save.

Hoffman did no better as Russell Martin greeted him with a home run on his first pitch. Unbelievably on the very next pitch, Marlon Anderson deposited the Dodgers fourth consecutive home run tying the game at 9-all and sending fans at Dodgers Stadium into a frenzy.

When the Padres regained the lead in the top of the 10th it seemed the comeback was lost, until with a man on base in the bottom of the 10th, Nomar Garciaparra stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run home run winning the game 11-10.

2000 Los Angeles Lakers vs Portland Trail Blazers Game 7

Heading into the 4th quarter of Game 7 in the 2000 Western Conference Finals it looked bleak.  The burgeoning Lakers dynasty looked like it was collapsing as they found themselves down 15 points to the Trail Blazers.  Despite being coached by Phil Jackson and having league MVP Shaquille O’Neal the Lakers were about to flame out of the playoffs.

Somehow the Lakers dug deep and proceeded to go on a 15-0 run to come all the way back, the 4th quarter was punctuated with an alley-loop from Kobe Bryant to Shaq as the Lakers defeated the Trail Blazers 89-84.  The win would propel the Lakers to three consecutive NBA titles ushering in a Lakers dynasty for the new millennium.
