Closing Thoughts

How the Lakers handle this free agency period will also tell us a lot about what they plan to do with the young core they have right now. They nearly included D’Angelo Russell in a trade package for DeMarcus Cousins earlier in this previous season, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see his name come up again if the right star becomes available.

Also, it’ll be a telling year fro Magic Johnson. After becoming team president right before the trade deadline, this next year will be Magic Johnson’s first full season, draft included, at the top.

The organization clearly trusts their Hall-of-Fame point guard from years ago to lead them back to the playoffs. They seem to have the right coach and the right mentality — now all they need is the right players.

Free agency could do the trick, but it might not be somewhere that Johnson immediately succeeds. The Lakers have had some noticeable issues trying to attract free agents due to their distance from contention.
