Chargers Rumors: Free agent targets after the 2017 NFL Draft
By Jason Reed
Marcus Gilchrist
Another member of the Jets secondary last season, the Chargers could pursue their own former player, safety Marcus Gilchrist. Gilchrist was recently released by the Jets after bringing in top safety Jamal Adams. Now, without a home, we could see Gilchrist return home to the Chargers, this time in Los Angeles instead of San Diego.
Just like with corner, the Chargers have a need at the safety position. While they have some depth, nobody on the roster really sticks out as a viable starting safety. The departure of Eric Weddle has really hurt the Chargers secondary, which was apparent by there 250 passing yards allowed per game.
While Gilchrist is no Weddle, he would give the Chargers a viable every snap option at safety and would further add to the depth at safety. The team did bring in Rayshawn Jenkins out of Miami, who holds explosive athleticism and speed. However, at the NFL level, the fourth round selection may struggle to adapt quickly to the talent the NFL holds.
That is why bringing in a good veteran safety like Gilchrist is necessary. If the Chargers want to go all in on their offense, at the very least they need to formulate a credible defense that can do a decent enough job. Not landing Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker has left them with few options at safety, with the primary option being Gilchrist.
