Dodgers Rumors: Ten trade targets for the Dodgers
By Jason Reed
Justin Verlander
Another name that has circled around MLB trade rumors is 2011 AL Cy Young winner and Most Valuable Player Justin Verlander. If anything, the most prevalent team that is connected to Verlander is indeed the Los Angeles Dodgers. Verlander does hold a no trade clause in his contract, so it is likely that we would only accept a deal that sent him to a contender.
Wanting to free up cap space as their stars are only getting older, Verlander would likely be the first Tiger to go. Verlander is still great, but he is not that dominating ace that he once was. As father time creeps up on him he will not be able to carry a pitching staff on his back, however, he will do just fine pitching behind Clayton Kershaw.
Let’s face it, a move to the National League may be best suited for Verlander in his career, and would maximize his potential. That’s not to say that Verlander still can’t deal, as he finished in the top three in Cy Young voting with his 3.04 ERA. This season may be more of a struggle for Verlander, as he is tossing to a 4.25 ERA, but he is still a great value.
It is evident that Verlander would thrive in the National League, especially in Dodger Stadium. In interleague games Verlander has posted a 28-5 record with a 3.03 games throughout his career. We previously discussed what it would take for Verlander, Joc Pederson and Jordan Sheffield, and it may be worth it.
