Dodgers rumors: Team could push to sign Bryce Harper in 2018
By Keith Rivas
The latest Dodgers rumors has a potential new slugger coming to town.
For the Dodgers, winning is everything. Not being in a World Series hunt in quite some time, it seems as if the franchise will do whatever it takes to win big.
While the Nationals recently signed Harper to an expensive extension, his options remain open after that expires.
And according to a report from Dodgers Nation, Los Angeles is on that list.
Per the report:
"Harper, along with fellow upcoming free agent Manny Machado, is expected to reset the market for superstars in a loaded free agency class. The Yankees, Phillies and Nationals will expectedly join L.A. in the bidding, increasing the odds of (if not guaranteeing) record-setting deals."
Harper in Los Angeles would be incredible. As of now, the Angels have the more MVP caliber player. Mke Trout is one of the best all around players in baseball, but if Bryce Harper comes to the Dodgers, it’d be a better battle for LA.
Also, as the report goes on to point out, the Dodgers must tread carefully. That same time frame is when Clayton Kershaw will be a free agent.
Not prioritizing him over a hitter would have devastating consequences for any championship attempt.
If Harper doesn’t come to LA, that wouldn’t be a surprise, though. Washington’s going to do everything in their power to keep him around. Whatever it takes, really.
The younger players that the Dodgers have in Seager, Bellinger, and others would also need extensions relatively soon. Financially, Harper would be a big risk. If he’s still at the top of his game by the time he’s a free agent, though, expect the Dodgers to show him the money.
