Signing Waiters proves the Lakers can finally get valuable free agents

No team has been snubbed more egregiously in free agency over recent summers than the Los Angeles Lakers. It seemed to snowball after a trade for Chris Paul was vetoed while the superstar point guard still played in New Orleans.

After that, a series of bad pick ups like Steve Nash and Dwight Howard seemed to put a haze over the purple and gold.

Waiters wouldn’t be a bad pick up at signing, but he’d need to prove himself to stick around. That’s all you can really ask for when Magic Johnson is now in charge of basketball operations. If a player isn’t producing, doesn’t seem to matter who it could be — besides Ingram — they could be gone.

As mentioned earlier, this also gives the Lakers something to reasonably measure Russell instead of just sticking with him because they want him to grow. Forcing the issue won’t work for the young star, and it may take trading him elsewhere to get that point across.

The biggest thing for the Lakers to keep in mind here is what they’d possibly be paying for a guy like him. Knowing that the Heat are willing to put money on the table, the ball really is in Waiters’ court here.
