2017 Outlook: In 2016, the Redskins couldn’t find a consistent starting running back- beginning the year starting Matt Jones and settling with Rob Kelly after two other running backs in between.
After fumbling the ball three times in 7 games, Matt Jones lost the starting job and never got a chance to redeem himself for the rest of the season.
Also, after the team drafted Samaje Perine this off-season, Matt Jones’ chances of being the starting running back seem smaller before. Realizing this, Jones asked the organization if he could be traded to another team.
If he stays on the Redskins, it is likely that Jones won’t see a lot of action. But if traded, he could be a promising acquisition for the team. After averaging 4.6 yards per carry in 2016, Jones proved that he has the potential to be a good running back if he can fix his fumbling problem.
His fate is ultimately in the hands of the Redskins. While he has the potential to be a good running back, as it stands right now, he won’t have a very large role in any offenses in 2017.
