It’s a stepping stone to out-playing his father

Klay Thompson was fortunate enough to come into a family all about basketball. His father, Mychal Thompson, ended his career in Los Angeles.

He played with the Lakers starting in the ’86-’87 season and ending in the ’90-’91 season. In the elder Thompson’s career, two rings were in order.

However, Klay has now matched that mark with his father, with All-Star appearances also favoring the son. For Klay to break out of his shell completely and become his own player, Los Angeles is the place for him to be.

Being a compliment to Steph Curry in 2015 and 2016 might’ve worked for him, but again, being third or fourth fiddle isn’t going to always be his forte.

Not to mention that he’s got the skill set to be the best player on the team if he played for 27 of the other 29 franchises. Those exceptions being Cleveland and San Antonio.

Klay would also bring a strong defensive element to the Lakers. If he were to become a Laker, he could easily be that final piece to the puzzle for the front office to figure out their defensive approach moving forward.

Aggression is key, but the young core doesn’t currently have that attribute.
