Lakers rumors: 3 reasons they still have a shot at Russell Westbrook
By Keith Rivas
He’s only two years away from being a free agent
In the year where he’ll be 30, Westbrook will be coming off a season where he was paid $30 million and will now be able to test the market if he wants to. Assuming that Oklahoma City and the star point guard don’t reach an extension before then, Los Angeles will be more than ready to make an offer.
Realistically, there’s always a chance for him to say no. But knowing how aggressive Magic Johnson will likely be when the Lakers are slightly better, anything could happen.
By that point, the Lakers will known a couple of things. First, how their young core is going to operate along with how good it really is. Secondly, whether or not they’re in the right direction going forward at point guard.
And third, whether or not they’re ready for a superstar at that position.
If the odds favor Westbrook on those three crucial questions, then there won’t be a reason for LA not to throw their hat in the ring.
Westbrook won’t be the only free agent on their mind, though. Rumor has it that LeBron James, Paul George, and others could be considering the purple and gold as well.
Hopefully by then, the slipper fits.
